Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X motorcycles unveiled

By Biketoq Editor

Triumph Motorcycles has unveiled two new models, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, both powered by an all-new fuel-injected and liquid-cooled 398cc single-cylinder engine. The engine, which combines Triumph’s modern classic style with state-of-the-art engineering, promises to deliver class-beating performance with a responsive, fun, and characterful power delivery. It also boasts an evocative, rich, and distinctive exhaust note.

The new engine features a peak power of 40 PS and peak torque of 37.5 Nm. It exceeds Euro 5 emissions standards and includes concealed liquid-cooling and machined cooling fins. The engine casings are coated in trademark black powder, and the power delivery is described as characterful, compelling, and responsive. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox.

Both the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X come equipped with a high level of rider-focused technology to enhance performance and safety. This includes a ride-by-wire throttle for enhanced rideability, safety, and control, switchable traction control, dual-channel ABS (which can be switched off on the Scrambler 400 X for off-road use), and a torque-assist clutch. The bikes also feature stylish new dual format instruments, all-LED lighting, and an immobiliser.

The ergonomics of both models have been designed for optimum comfort and control. They feature a slim waistline, an accessible seat height of 790mm and 835mm respectively, and a low weight of 170kg / 179kg, ensuring assured low-speed handling and easy feet-down manoeuvres.

The Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X each have their own model-specific chassis set-up. The Speed 400 features large 43mm big-piston upside-down front forks, a mono-shock rear suspension unit with an external reservoir, lightweight 17-inch wheels, and roadster-specific geometry and wheelbase. It also has powerful four-piston radial front brakes with a 300mm front disc and braided lines for a responsive brake feel.

On the other hand, the Scrambler 400 X has a longer wheelbase, longer travel suspension, a larger 19-inch front wheel, and wide handlebars for greater stability and control when riding on loose surfaces. It also features a larger cast steel brake pedal and high-grip foot pegs for a more natural standing riding position when riding off-road. Its larger 320mm front brake disc and optimised pad compound deliver progressive braking performance in all conditions.
